Petition filed to rename Savannah square named for slaveowner

The Center for Jubilee, Reconciliation and Healing filed a petition to the city on Monday to rename Calhoun Square to Jubilee Square, the culmination of months of work, research and education, founder Patt Gunn said.
Initially, the group, founded by Gunn and Rosalyn Rouse, were looking to change the names of two squares, Whitefield and Calhoun, which are located on cemeteries once used to bury both free and enslaved people of color.
Gunn said Monday that changing the name of Whitefield Square is still a goal, but they’re looking to focus on Calhoun Square for now. Baby steps, she said. ....

The British had hoped to quell the Colonial uprising by seizing control of major coastal cities, but Col. William Moultrie’s successful command of his 400 fighters resulted in heavy damage to the warships at Charleston Harbor’s entrance, causing the fleet to retreat.
It would be nearly three years before the British tried again in the South. They were determined to take Charleston but by a less direct path.
That second attempt would succeed but not before an important land battle the Battle of Beaufort at Port Royal Island pitted British forces against their old nemesis, Col. Moultrie. This was the first serious land battle of the war in South Carolina and its first American victory. ....

Williamsburg battlefield land purchased for preservation

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) A significant portion of Williamsburg’s historic Civil War battlefield was recently purchased to be secured for preservation.
The American Battlefield Trust bought the 29 acres in the area of the “Bloody Ravine” from The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, The Virginia Gazette reported. Funding came from grants from the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program and the commonwealth of Virginia, in addition to money raised by the Battlefield Trust.
The land was zoned for commercial used and valued at $2,743,000. Located about 1 mile from the city’s historic area and primarily within the city limits, the land is pristine and looks much as it did 158 years ago when the battle took place, according to the newspaper. ....
