There are all sorts of national organizations representing racial, gender and cultural communities.
Should the state’s taxpayers fund the dues so that the Indiana General Assembly, through certain legislators, can be a member of such groups?
The question came up this week during a session of the state’s Legislative Council that approved a resolution paying dues to five national organizations.
They include the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL), whose president is Rep. Matt Lehman, a Republican from Bremen, and the National Council of Legislators from Gaming States (NCLGS) whose treasurer is Sen. Jon Ford, a Republican from Terre Haute. ....

Matt Lehman, NCOIL President. The Model will be considered by the NCOIL Executive Committee for final adoption at the NCOIL Spring Meeting in April.
Rep. Rowland said, I want to thank everyone who participated in the interim meeting. We had a great initial discussion on these issues in December at the NCOIL Annual Meeting, which included a number of speakers with differing views. That discussion enabled us to digest all the feedback on the initial draft of the Model and move forward with adoption of the Model during this interim meeting. Pedro Montenegro was puzzled by the car insurance quote he received when he moved to Washington, D.C., from California.
The only ticket he ever got was for a broken taillight that he later fixed. But despite a near spotless driving record, Montenegro was facing a $300 monthly premium, much more than some of his friends who he believed drove more recklessly.
