Wallace Monument: Stirling Council fulfils promise of free entry

The offer of free entry will run throughout 2021 with residents available to take part.
The Monument is scheduled to reopen on Monday, April 26, meaning residents can now book their visit and plan their trip to the famous attraction.
The iconic structure was recently showcased around the world when hosting a live fireworks display during BBC Scotland’s Hogmanay 2020 celebrations.
Visitors can explore the Abbey Craig, with newly opened, expanded views, or climb the famous spiral staircase inside the Monument itself and take in the amazing scenery from the Crown.
Stirling Council Senior Manager for Economic Development & Communities, Stuart Oliver, said: “The National Wallace Monument returned to Stirling Council control last year and, as a thank you and gift to our residents for their efforts and sacrifice over the past 12 months, we are offering them admission to one of Stirling’s premier tourist attractions free of charge.

How Mel's 'Braveheart effect' gave huge boost to tourism

It has been more than 25 years since Mel Gibson painted his face two-thirds blue, pulled on a kilt and howled: “They may take our lives but they’ll never take our freedom.”
The film won five Oscars and made box office history for its bloody battle scenes and literal cast of thousands.
It also irked many historians for taking creative liberties with the plot.
But now it has been claimed that Braveheart did more to bring visitors to Scotland than its own national tourism body could have achieved in 20 years.
Tom Buncle, who was chief executive of the Scottish Tourist Board at the time, said nothing since has compared to the influence of Mel Gibson’s epic William Wallace tale.

It was rather unfair of Joe Biden to call the lifting of mask requirements in Texas and Mississippi ‘Neanderthal thinking’.

Even as late as pre-March 2020, not many people would be willing to accept, much less admit, that there is a bit of the Neanderthal lurking in modern Homo sapiens.
After all, Neanderthals disappeared off the face of the earth 40,000 years ago, once we humans moved out of Africa and got cracking with this civilisation thing. But not before a few of us and a few of them hooked up in the 5,400 years we co-existed on Earth, leading to almost all non-Africans today having a smidgen of Neanderthal in their bodies.

5 totally unique Scottish city breaks we can’t wait to try
The Scots do city breaks better
Mar 15, 2021
We miss city breaks: the excitement of exploring bustling streets, seeing the sights and soaking up the culture (basically eating
all the street food and sampling a cocktail or five).
If you’re already dreaming of your post-lockdown adventures, you may want to look north of the border. Because Scotland offers a totally different kind of break. For a start, its cities are full of surprises, from Dundee’s water sports to Aberdeen’s sandy beaches. And not only are they packed with green spaces, you can go from cityscapes to sweeping landscapes in under an hour. It’s the best of both worlds, so here are five city breaks with a difference to try when it’s safe to travel again.
