Senate committee advances some GOP election bills, but others remain stalled

We have to take into consideration unintended consequences, Bernier said. I don t care that the governor s going to veto the bills. I m going to make sure that if I vote yes on something, it s something I can defend and support, whether this year, next year or under the next governor, whoever that will be. I am not going to pass through bad legislation thinking it s going to get vetoed, and hoping that it does get vetoed.
Bernier said she has fundamental issues with some of the election bills. She said some bills have provisions that should be combined together, as well, making them premature for a floor vote. She said the committee process so far has been extraordinarily painful. ....

MADISON, Wis. A Wisconsin Senate committee took up election reform bills at a hearing Thursday, one aimed at keeping third-party groups from dumping money on elections in targeted areas.
The state Senate Committee on Elections, Election Process Reform and Ethics also heard from Milwaukee Election Commission chief Claire Woodall-Vogg, who sounded defensive in explaining her dealings with left-leaning election groups. ....

Clerk Christenson Testifies in Opposition to Election Bills Before Senate Committee

“Wisconsin’s elections are a great example of our proud tradition of good, honest, and transparent government,” said Clerk Christenson. “Despite the pandemic, all 72 Wisconsin counties conducted free, accurate, and secure elections in November. There are over thirty election law reform bills currently introduced at the State Legislature. Like the four heard at yesterday’s hearing, most of these bills, if passed, would have negative consequences on Wisconsin elections including voter disenfranchisement and voter suppression.” 
Senate Bill 207 would restrict local election officials from applying for and accepting any donation or grant from an individual or nongovernmental entity for election administration, except under specific circumstances. The bill also restricts who can serve as a poll worker. ....
