Spencer Turnbull Authored the Latest of Many No-Hitters

It’s time to proclaim 2021 the Year of the No-Hitter.
At the beginning of April, Joe Musgrove graced us with an electric performance versus the Rangers. Just five days later, Carlos Rodón announced his resurgence by shutting down Cleveland. John Means then tossed a near-perfect game against the Mariners, and Wade Miley followed in Rodón’s footsteps, handing Cleveland another no-hit night. That brings us to yesterday, when Spencer Turnbull became the latest pitcher to go the distance, striking out nine Mariners while allowing just two baserunners via a pair of walks.
That’s an almost unfathomable five no-hitters – and we’re still in the month of May. Since 1901, the only other season with at least five such games before June was 1917, a year that falls in major league baseball’s Dead Ball era. There were six total no-nos that year, all thrown prior to June, but it doesn’t feel like the string of no-hitters will come to a stop this time around. Though the l ....

White Sox' Billy Hamilton Makes Leaping Catch After Four-Hit Game

Hamilton has never been known for his offensive ability, and indeed, when the White Sox signed him in the spring, he was viewed as a situational threat. But talking with White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson, Hamilton has reframed the way he thinks about himself, trying to focus more on being a hitter first and a runner second.
Certainly he s receiving the opportunity to put that thinking into action. The White Sox are down a pair of their starting outfielders, with Eloy Jiménez and Luis Robert in recovery mode, and have yet to get fourth outfielder Adam Engel back from a springtime hamstring strain. That s pressed Hamilton into duty on a far more regular basis than even he imagined. ....

The 35 pitchers who have thrown multiple no-hitters

Goodwin & Company - Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division. Benjamin K. Edwards Baseball Card Collection.
Larry Corcoran is a name a lot of fans may be unfamiliar with, but for a brief time in the 1880s as a member of the Chicago White Stockings, he was quite a force on the mound. The right-hander tossed three no-hitters in the early 1880s, but he then had a hard and fast fall from grace. By 85 Corcoran had a dead arm and two years later he was completely out of baseball. Unrelated to his no-hitters, he is amusingly credited with coming up with the first method of communicating pitches with his catcher something he accomplished by shifting his wad of tobacco to different places in his mouth.  ....

Today in Blue Jays-adjacent history: Pirate trickery with a pilfered pitcher

‘Twas the week before Christmas, when all through the league
Not a front office was stirring, no bit of intrigue
The fanbases were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of free agents danced in their heads
But it was not always such a completely dead period. As I outlined earlier today, for a long time the last day to tender contracts to players for the next season (and thereby keep them under reserve) was December 20th. Initially this involved literally mailing out the contracts, and at some point transitioned to the current process whereby teams submit a list to MLB, who compile and submit a central tender list to the union. ....
