'Outmigration' is a bipartisan pickle | News, Sports, Jobs

People walk on the street, Monday, April 26, 2021 in New York. The once-a-decade head count of the United States shows where the population grew during the past 10 years and where it shrank. New York will lose one seat in Congress as a result of national population shifts, according to census data released Monday. (AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)
Hours after it became clear New York state was going to lose a Congressional seat due to the newly released U.S. Census numbers, the criticism came pouring in. Republicans, specifically those from the Western region, criticized Albany and its policies as the reason for the continued exodus. ....

As part of a nearly $90 million expansion plan, Wells Food Corp. has numerous job openings at its Dunkirk plant.
Hollow campaign promises of years past appear to have come home to roost. When seeking municipal or county office, the message most likely heard often from candidates focused on bringing jobs to Chautauqua County.
Despite what this week’s most recent state figures noted, it seems current state Sen. George Borrello had it right when he began his term as Chautauqua County executive in 2017. As part of his first 100 days in office, Borrello visited more than 100 area businesses and found a common theme: the jobs are already here. What we need are some workers. ....

Melanie Witkowski of Prevention Works, which has offices in Dunkirk and Jamestown, says teenage marijuana use has increased.
Melanie Witkowski knows the numbers too well and they signal reasons for worry on a local level. Since discussions began to center around legalizing marijuana in New York state in recent years, she has seen a trend that could be considered as disturbing for Chautauqua County and our society.
As executive director of Prevention Works, Witkowski’s organization focuses on a safe and healthy environment by effectively educating the community on positive life choices. It has an excellent relationship with the county’s 18 school districts and 7,900 students in grades seven to 12. ....

Times remain desperate for area Dems | News, Sports, Jobs

Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas, who may be the most powerful Democrat in the county, did not win re-election handily in 2019.
OBSERVER File Photo
Healing has not come easy in the last four months. Losses in the major local state and county elections were far from minimal. They were downright staggering.
Loyalties also have been fractured in the aftermath. There’s been petty infighting in the north and south county that adds to a lack of direction.
It is obvious the Chautauqua County Democrats are far from unified. All one needed to witness was the October vote when incumbent Chairman Norman Green was chosen to stay in control by virtue of a vote overseen by the Lewis & Lewis attorneys in Jamestown. ....

Fair-weather senator can't keep city date | News, Sports, Jobs

AP photo
U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand has not made a stop in Dunkirk-Fredonia since 2016.
During a blustery, bone-chilling February morning last year, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer was joined by about a half-dozen north county veterans as he called for additional health-care assistance for those who may have been touched by Agent Orange during their service to the United States in Vietnam. As winds whipped across Memorial Park right off Lake Erie in Dunkirk, elected officials who joined him also spoke briefly in doing their best to keep the event moving.
Real-feel temperatures were somewhere between zero and the teens. But Schumer, who makes a concerted effort to visit all 62 state counties each year, did not disappoint in his appearance and message weeks before the COVID pandemic hit. ....
