Otis officials begin study of cell tower proposal; foes step up efforts

Residents who stand against the project, with help from the group Stop the Big Pond Cell Tower, have spelled out their opposition in a 26-page legal memo that was delivered to the town Feb. 3. Among other things, the memo says too little information is available to justify the project and that the tower would have an adverse impact on the neighborhood.
Town officials say they are interested in using a tower to fill a gap in emergency radio communications; having a telecommunications company put up a tower could allow them to place a radio antenna there as well, if that s found to be an effective way to patch holes in the ability of crews to remain in touch out in the field. ....

Indian firm bets on local manufacturing, stock soars 824 percent

Almost three decades ago, Sunil Vachani borrowed $35,000 so he could start making 14-inch television sets in a rented shed outside New Delhi. It was an unconventional choice given India, though renowned for software and services, had long lagged behind in manufacturing.
Today, Vachani’s startup has grown into a sprawling electronics empire. His Dixon Technologies boasts a market value of more than $2.5 billion and the capacity to produce about 50 million smartphones this year. It’s an early indicator of the country’s opportunities and challenges in building a sophisticated manufacturing sector, a top priority for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
While Vachani, 52, struggled in his early days, his company’s shares have surged 824% since a 2017 initial public offering. Sales and profits have boomed with domestic demand for smartphones, along with India’s ambitious plans to develop its own local industry. ....

If there is one thing I canât stand, it is government overregulation of cryptozoological creatures.
There are actually several things I canât standÂ â someone putting an empty steak sauce bottle back in the refrigerator, irresponsible dog owners and people with Facebook medical degrees, just to name a few.
This week, though, it is government overregulation of cryptozoological creatures, specifically Bigfoot.
Regular readers of this column know I am a citizen of the city that proudly hosts the annual Western North Carolina (WNC) Bigfoot Festival during non-plague years.
