The Strange Case of the Persian Princess Mummy | Mysterious Universe

In October of 2000, police in Karachi, Pakistan received a lead that a man by the name of Ali Akbar was attempting to sell a mummy on the black antiquities market for 600 million rupees, or about $11 million, and it was no ordinary mummy, but rather what was advertised as a “Persian Princess.” When police raided the home of Akbar, he folded under interrogation and led them to the house of his co-conspirator, Wali Mohammad Reeki, who lived in the rural desert region in the province of Baluchistan. There they found the mummy in question, along with its sarcophagus, and Reeki admitted that he had purchased the mummy from a man named Sharif Shah Bakhi after he had found it in the aftermath of an earthquake near Quetta, on the border of Iran and Afghanistan. The men were arrested, but the mystery of the mummy was just beginning, leading down a rabbit hole of strange artifacts, intrigue, and murder. ....

Prehistoric footprints suggest mammals did like to be beside the seaside

Fossilised footprint tracks, recently discovered within the Hanna Formation in Wyoming, USA, which have been dated to 58 million years ago, may represent the earliest evidence of mammals gathering by the sea, according to a study published in
Scientific Reports. The findings suggest that mammals may have first used marine habitats at least 9.4 million years earlier than previously thought, in the late Paleocene (66-56 million years ago), rather than the Eocene (56-33.9 million years ago).
Drs. Anton Wroblewski and Bonnie Gulas-Wroblewski examined and photographed over 1,000 metres of fossilised footprints in an area dated back to 58 million years ago by plant and pollen fossils. The authors identified various different tracks. One set showed relatively large, five-toed footprints, comparable to the foot size of a modern-day brown bear, another showed medium-sized, four-toed footprints. Southern African dinosaur had irregular growth

Anyone who s raised a child or a pet will know just how fast and how steady their growth seems to be. You leave for a few days on a work trip and when you come home the child seems to have grown 10cm! That s all well and good for the modern household, but how did dinosaurs grow up? Did they, too, surprise their parents with their non-stop growth?
A new study lead by Dr Kimberley Chapelle of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand suggests NOT. At least for one iconic southern African dinosaur species. By looking at the fossil thigh bones under a microscope, researchers can count growth lines, like those of a tree. This allows them to study how much the individuals grew each year. By looking at growth rings in the bones of Massospondylus carinatus, Dr Chapelle was able to show that its growth varied season-to-season, more like a tree than a puppy or a baby human. ....
