India on Tuesday registered 10,584 new coronavirus cases, taking the overall count to 1,10,16,434. Seventy-eight more deaths pushed the country’s toll to 1,56,463.
The number of active cases stood at 1,47,306, while the number of recoveries reached 1,07,12,665. As many as 1,17,45,552 health care and frontline workers have been vaccinated against the coronavirus so far. Of these, 6,28,696 were inoculated on Monday.
India is using two vaccines, the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine produced by the Serum Institute in Pune, and a government-backed vaccine developed by Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech whose efficacy is not entirely yet known. ....

New Delhi, Feb 23 (IANS): The genetic diagnostic laboratories in India have detected over 24,000 mutations in the strains of SARS-CoV-2 in the last year, top officials told IANS on Tuesday.
The officials added that the mutations have been detected in around 7,000 variants of the novel coronavirus which are under circulation in the country.
We have detected around 24,300 mutations in 7,000 variants of the virus currently under circulation, an official who is a key member of the National Task Force for Covid-19 informed.
The information was also corroborated by contacts working at laboratories that are part of Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomic Consortia (INSACOG) set-up by the Union Health Ministry in December last year in the backdrop of the emergence of a newly identified variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the UK, South Africa and some other parts of the ....
