“We’ve got a bipartisan council here who is in agreement that this ordinance needs to be in place, that we need protections for people in our community,” said council member Larken Egleston, a Democrat. “I think that’s something that we should applaud because we’ve had a number of issues this year that have been divisive, that have split the council.”

Mayor Vi Lyles said Monday the city should have correctly sized districts before moving holding its next election.
The Charlotte City Council and Mayor Vi Lyles are in near consensus that the city can’t hold its elections this fall because of delays in the release of census data.
But council members decided to wait on formally postponing the September primary and November general election, based on the recommendation of City Attorney Patrick Baker during a meeting Monday night.
Baker said the city can wait until April or May to make the decision to postpone and wait for the General Assembly to give Charlotte and other impacted cities and towns guidance. ....

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - A consequential election for Charlotte residents in November might be deferred until 2022 because census data won’t be available until the end of September.
That census data is needed to re-district Charlotte City Council, and an election before that happens, might not even be legal.
During a Budget and Effectiveness Committee meeting, Councilmember Ed Driggs said that data provided by the planning department indicated there was a discrepancy of 20 to 30 percent between the council’s biggest and smallest districts. ....

The city of Charlotte and CMS need census data to draw new districts to comply with the U.S. Supreme Court s ruling of One Person, One Vote. With the release of that delayed, both are scrambling to determine how they can draw new maps in time for their fall elections.
The release of highly detailed, precinct-by-precinct population counts from the 2020 census has been delayed by several months, which could impact the elections for the Charlotte City Council and Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board.
The Census Bureau announced Wednesday that the data – known as PL 94-171 files may not be released until the end of July, as opposed to winter or early spring as planned. ....
