CANBERA (dpa-AFX) - Asian stock markets are mixed on Friday, following the broadly negative cues overnight from Wall Street on reports President Joe Biden plans to almost double the capital gains tax for wealthy individuals to fund spending on childcare and education. The mood is quite cautious in most of the markets in the region amid the continuing surge in coronavirus in the region and the possibility of lockdowns in certain places. Asian markets ended mostly higher on Thursday.
Australian stock market is slightly lower in choppy trading on Friday, with the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 staying above the 7,000 mark near 14-month highs, as gold miners, energy and banking stocks are weighing down the market. FTSE 100 Slides Amid Rise In Pound
BRUSSELS/FRANKFURT/PARIS (dpa-AFX) - U.K. stocks edged lower on Friday as the pound strengthened in reaction to upbeat retail sales and PMI data released earlier in the day.
The benchmark FTSE 100 dropped 22 points, or 0.3 percent, to 6,916 after closing 0.6 percent higher on Thursday.
Exporters were moving lower, with British American Tobacco and Diageo falling about 1 percent amid sterling s strength.
BP Plc fell over 1 percent and Royal Dutch Shell was down 0.7 percent despite oil prices increasing in the world markets.
Senior Plc shares fell 2.2 percent after the company said trading for the three months ended March 2021 has been in line with expectations. ....

Oil Extends Losses Amid India s Covid-19 Surge
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Oil prices fell for a second day running on Wednesday amid concerns that climbing Covid-19 cases in India and further restrictions to limit the spread will dampen the demand outlook. India is the world s third biggest oil consumer.
Brent crude futures for June settlement fell 91 cents, or 1.4 percent, to 65.66 per barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures for June delivery were down 79 cents, or 1.3 percent, at $61.88. The May contract expired on Tuesday down 1.5 percent at $62.44.
India is currently being hit hardest by the pandemic, reporting a record number of infections and deaths. Health ministry data on Wednesday showed a record 2,023 fatalities and 295,000 new cases in 24 hours. ....

China's market regulator investigates Alibaba-Minmetals JV

BEIJING (Reuters) -China s market regulator is investigating a joint venture between e-commerce giant Alibaba Group and Minmetals Development, Minmetals said on Monday, amid a broad antitrust clampdown on internet firms.
Minmetals said in a statement that it received a notice from the State Administration for Market Regulation in recent days about an investigation into the joint venture formed in 2015, in which Alibaba transferred its 44% stake to an unrelated firm in 2019.
Alibaba declined to comment.
The investigation follows the record $2.75 billion antitrust fine imposed on Alibaba earlier this month.
On Tuesday, Minmetals said in a statement that according to its preliminary understanding, the company s e-commerce cooperation did not involve any violation of the anti-monopoly law, and there was no damage to the interests of customers, consumers, and investments. ....
