AUGUSTA  The Friends of the Maine State Museum is to host an online party, “We’d Like to Propose a Toast,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 15.
The one-hour event will combine a mix of history, laughter, anecdotes, important objects from the collection, fascinating facts, and a silent auction. Humorist Gary Crocker will serve as emcee.

AUGUSTA Laurie LaBar, Maine State Museum’s curator of history and decorative arts, is to share insights and images of Maine quilts during a webinar at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 10.
The webinar marks the official launch of LaBar’s new book, “Maine Quilts: 250 Years of Comfort and Community.”
The book, co-published by the museum and Down East Books, is the first to take a comprehensive look at Maine quilts and quilters. For LaBar, it is the culmination of more than a decade of research about quilts from across the state. Kennebec commissioners vote to move Augusta's Melville Fuller statue

AUGUSTA The Kennebec County commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to remove a controversial statue from county property six months after the state’s judicial branch raised the issue.
The statue, which was erected outside the Kennebec County courthouse in 2013, depicts Augusta native Melville Fuller, who served as chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court when it decided a case that institutionalized racial discrimination in the United States for more than five decades.
“I do not believe that Kennebec County should convey to others that we in any way support that court decision,” Patsy Crockett, chairwoman of the commissioners, said at the commissioners’ meeting. “That’s not to say we’re not proud that he was born in Augusta and the other good things he did in his life. But I, therefore, believe that the Melville Weston Fuller statue should be moved to a location more appropriate that would serve educational purposes and where ....
