Playwright, lyricist, and librettist Melisa Tien is the creator and producer of the upcoming live, online song cycle Swell, presented by HERE from March 17-21, 2021. This contemporary work about immigrants and children of immigrants, written by immigrants and children of immigrants, is directed by Elena Araoz with music direction by Tian Hui Ng.
Right now, the U.S. feels like it s on the brink of so many things - politically, economically, socially. Immigrant stories, especially ones that humanize the people they re about, help highlight those who are often left behind when, for example, a medical disaster happens. Swell reminds us these are real people, simply trying to make their way, like everyone else, Melisa said of the piece s subject and timeliness. ....

Danzmayr, renowned international conductor, joins the Oregon Symphony at a pivotal time for its 2021-2022 season
The Oregon Symphony is proud to announce that acclaimed Austrian-born conductor David Danzmayr will serve as its next Music Director with the launch of its 2021-2022 season and the symphony s 125th anniversary year. Regarded as one of today s most gifted conductors, Danzmayr recently served as Chief Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Director of ProMusica Chamber Orchestra. He has conducted orchestras at some of the world s most prominent concert halls in Germany, Italy, Scotland and major cities across the United States. Danzmayr follows esteemed Music Director Carlos Kalmar, who has held the position with the Oregon Symphony for the last 18 years. ....

The American classical music vernacular would never be complete without the catalogs of great composers like William Grant Still, Florence Price, and George Walker. 
But even so, Black voices have been underrepresented and under-highlighted in American classical music since American composers gained a foothold in the 20th century.
As CapRadio continues to increase the number of composers of color from the past we feature on our airwaves, I think it is also all too important to take a look toward the next generation of Black composers.  ....

The spirit of innovation is alive in Kaufman Music Center s Winter/Spring online concert season, offering a wide variety of creative programs. Its three Artists-in-Residence for 2020-21 - composer Lisa Bielawa, composer/pianist Conrad Tao, and cellist Seth Parker Woods - feature prominently in the season: Tao and Woods will perform in the Ecstatic Music series (May 6 and May 9 respectively), while Bielawa will unveil her opera-in-progress Centuries in the Hours with help from students from KMC s Special Music School High School (May 27). ....
