In a scenario where U.K. or U.S. publishers almost exclusively decide which translated books the Third World gets to read, Kolkata-based Seagull Books bucks the trend by commissioning translations directly for both local and global markets
The politics of translation has been brilliantly excavated in recent decades by theorists ranging from Walter Benjamin to Gayatri Spivak. More quantitative studies also exist, indicating how translation flows in certain directions: for instance, from English to other languages, sometimes even from one language to another via the medium of English. These are highly unequal flows in a world of great inequalities. A handful of languages, with English as the first of the first, determines these flows. ....

Bengali theatre actor Koushik Kar was allegedly dropped from a play named Ghum Nei , after he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The play is directed by Saurav Palodhi.
In 2019, Kar was invited by the theatre group, Ichheymoto, owned by Palodhi, to essay the central character in the drama.
The play is an adaptation of the 2015 Dadri incident where a man called Mohammed Akhlaq was beaten to death by a mob on suspicion of eating beef. ....

Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], March 12 (ANI): Bengali theatre artist and director Kaushik Kar who has been allegedly dropped from two theatre projects after the actor joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) calls the action a cultural crisis in poll-bound West Bengal.
Speaking to ANI, Kar said, I, as an individual, have joined a particular party. I am a theater artist. Our friends with whom I worked in the past are believers of left ideology. They took the decision of dropping me without a consultation. The news circulated and I got to know it from other sources. It is definitely a cultural crisis. ....
