New Delhi: Twenty people who returned to India from the United Kingdom have tested positive for the new UK variant genome of SARS-CoV-2 so far, the Union health ministry said on Wednesday.
The tally includes six people who were found positive for the new virus strain on Tuesday.
The ministry said the mutated UK strain was detected in eight samples at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), one at the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics (NIBMG), Kalyani (near Kolkata), one at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune, seven at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences Hospital (NIMHANS) Bengaluru, two at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad and one at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi. ....

Immune pressure due to non-judicious use of therapies can lead to virus mutation: ICMR chief
Non-judicious use of therapies, that have not been scientifically established for treating COVID-19, put immune pressure on the virus which can lead to mutations, said Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) chief Balram Bhargava on Tuesday amid concerns over the United Kingdom variant of the coronavirus.
Respiratory viruses may go through minor genetic mutations from time to time. But after several drifts, they can become a cause of concern as has happened with the new UK strain of the coronavirus. It has a higher transmissibility rate of about 60 per cent, he said at a press briefing. ....

Ill-advised therapies can cause COVID-19 mutations; vaccine effective against new strain: ICMR chief

Ill-advised therapies can cause COVID-19 mutations; vaccine effective against new strain: ICMR chief
It is important from the scientific community perspective that we do not put too much immune pressure on the virus, said Bhargava

The chief of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Balram Bhargava cautioned on Tuesday against the use of irrational and unscientific therapies to treat COVID-19. Using methods that have not been scientifically established can lead to mutations in the coronavirus by putting unnecessary immune pressure on it, informed Bhargava.
Addressing concerns pertaining to the new strain found in the UK, Bhargava mentioned at a press conference that it is rather normal for respiratory viruses to go through mutations now and then. Having said that, multiple frequent genetic drifts could pose a problem as has happened in the UK. That is a point of concern. We are carrying out tests in ....
