Last week Hong Kong saw not only the closure of a newspaper but the death of press freedom. The city’s most popular newspaper and the only remaining Chinese-language, mass circulation pro-democracy daily publication,
Apple Daily, published its final edition on June 24. It printed a million copies, and they sold out within hours.
The death of
Apple Daily was not because it ran out of money or markets. On the contrary, it had 600,000 paid subscribers and more than US$50 million in the bank enough to cover another 18 months. Myanmar needs our prayers and robust action by world leaders

By Benedict Rogers
March 14 was the Global Day of Prayer for Myanmar or Burma, as so many in the democracy movement and the ethnic nationalities still prefer.
This is an annual event initiated 25 years ago by David Eubank, an American evangelical missionary, human rights activist and humanitarian relief worker who founded and leads the Free Burma Rangers. In 1996, he met Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon, and she told him that she reads the Bible regularly and that her favorite verse is John 8:3: “You will know the truth and the truth will set you free.” She asked him to pray for the country. A quarter of a century on, those words and that call for prayer for Myanmar have never been more needed. ....

HSBC Doubles Down on China and Asia Amidst Criticism by US, UK

HSBC Doubles Down on China, Asian Markets Amidst Criticism by US, UK
After aligning with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), there’s no turning back.
Having faced criticism in the UK and the United States for endorsing the national security law forced upon Hong Kong by the CCP, global banking giant HSBC is now doubling down on China and the Asian market.
The London-based international bank announced during its fourth-quarter earnings call on Feb. 23 that it would accelerate its “pivot to Asia” by retrenching its retail presence in the United States and investing billions in growing its footprint across Asia, including mainland China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and India. ....

A silent massacre of Hong Kong's freedoms

A silent massacre of Hong Kong s freedoms
As church leaders stand on the wrong side of history, we must hope that Catholics keep their soul and values intact

Hong Kong is facing today its almost silent, legislative Tiananmen. No shots have been fired, no tanks are on the streets, no soldiers are pulverizing protesters. Instead, bit by bit, with every knock on the door, every arrest, every threat, Beijing is carrying out a massacre of Hong Kong’s freedoms and occupying every corner of Hong Kong’s public square. ....
