As it became clear that many workplaces – essential and less so – would remain open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, ALIGN became a key player in a coalition of 70 unions, workers’ centers and nonprofits that have pushed the NY HERO Act. The bill sets enforceable workplace standards for testing, PPE, social distancing, hygiene and more. Maritza Silva-Farrell has led ALIGN, an alliance of labor and community organizations, since 2016.

Executive Director, New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health
NYCOSH, the watchdog nonprofit that Charlene Obernauer leads, is well known for its annual report on construction deaths in New York state. The latest report on calendar year 2019 found that while construction-related deaths dipped slightly across the state, they rose 10% over the previous year within the five boroughs. In her role, Obernauer has advocated for better COVID-19 protection at New York work sites and a ....

Dmitry Podobreev: UF should use food contract to promote positive change

In a guest column published last month, the field president for Aramark Higher Education, Trevor Ferguson, wrote to explain some of their business practices in the context of rising scrutiny of their food service contract with the University of Florida. As part of the movement behind that scrutiny, Food Justice UF would like to respond.
Our coalition demands the inclusion of six specific, quantitative and stakeholder-driven measures in UF’s invitation to negotiate for a new food service contract. These measures are to support food service, food chain and farm workers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; increase purchases from local small and mid-sized farms and vendors; and end support for the exploitation of prisoners. Ferguson’s column was more of an advertisement for Aramark than an engagement with these demands, and advertisements rarely give you an accurate view of the product.  ....

UF pressured to become a national leader with new food vendor contract

For years, University of Florida students and agricultural coalitions have been pressuring campus administrators  with some success to insist that UF s main food vendor pay workers better and work toward offering more sustainable food options.
Now, with the vendor s contract coming up for review in the coming year, they are bringing even more pressure to bear.
A letter sent to UF administrators this week outlines several demands for the contract.
It was sent by the Food Justice League, a local activist organization, and the Agricultural Justice Project, a Gainesville-based nonprofit rooted in local communities nationwide. The letter featured 41 national and regional supportive signatures, including some members of the Gainesville and Alachua County commissions, the county s school board, the Alachua County Labor Coalition, UF faculty and graduate student union branches and a number of nearby farms. ....
