CORA Service’s annual Champions for Children event recognized members of the community making differences in the lives of children, while also looking back on its first 50 years of service.
Sister Charity Kohl, who founded CORA in 1971, was honored as one of this year’s civic champions as CORA celebrates half a century of service.
CORA Services Inc.’s annual Champions for Children event may not have looked the same this year as in years past, but there was more to celebrate here than ever before.
Founded in 1971, this year CORA is celebrating its 50th year of serving youth and young families in Northeast Philadelphia. This is also the first time CORA hosted its celebration since acquiring Good Shepherd Mediation Program, Philadelphia’s only community mediation center since 1984, last September. With the pandemic-sparked economic downturn, untold numbers of renters in the U.S. became newly vulnerable to financial and housing insecurity. Advocates worry that a wave of evictions will follow the lifting of emergency moratoriums currently in place. But pre-court mediation programs in Philadelphia offer an approach to preventing displacement and heading off protracted legal battles between landlords and tenants.
As part of the Philadelphia Eviction Prevention Project, the Good Shepherd Mediation Program has tested free and voluntary landlord-tenant mediation and, during COVID19, has started offering a virtual mediation through Zoom.

Philadelphia's Eviction Diversion Program Extended After Showing Results – Next City

Diane Buchanan lives with her daughter and her grandson in an apartment in Philadelphia. When the COVID-19 pandemic began, she recently told a committee of the Philadelphia City Council, her daughter lost her job as a hairdresser, leaving Buchanan to carry more of the burden of rent and bills. Schools closed, and her grandson started learning from home. The refrigerator stopped working, and the landlord “slow-walked” the repairs for months, she said. She started thinking she might get evicted over the dispute with the landlord. She thought she might be able to move in with her son, but he had a one-bedroom apartment a dangerous situation during a pandemic. She also might be able to move to California and live with her brother, but she didn’t want to rely on him and lose her independence.
