Flea, roadside markets to reopen on Navajo Nation under yellow status

FARMINGTON  The Navajo Department of Health loosened restrictions for certain businesses and allowed flea markets and roadside markets to reopen beginning on May 24 under guidelines in the latest public health emergency order.
The health department is keeping businesses in the yellow tier of its reopening plan as its coronavirus case rate remains low with a slowed infection rate.
The order increased the capacity for indoor dining at restaurants to 50%. It also boosted capacity to 50% for marinas, parks, museums and zoos.
However, areas managed by the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department remain closed to all.
Still not allowed to operate are youth programs, but the Navajo Health Command Operations Center is reviewing the possible reopening of these programs. ....

Navajo Nation Council removes financial officer amid COVID test claims

FARMINGTON  The Navajo Nation Council has removed Pearline Kirk as the top financial officer for the tribal government, stemming from allegations that her office entered an illegal contract for COVID-19 testing on employees and other related services.
Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez on May 20 named former auditor general Elizabeth Begay as acting controller. Begay will start work on May 21, according to the president s office.
Delegates voted 13 in favor and 10 opposed on May 19 on emergency legislation brought forward last week by Delegate Pernell Halona.
While the bill does not cite reasons for removing Kirk, it states the council no longer desires to retain her as controller and finds it to be in the best interest to remove her from the office. ....
