United Way of Central Mass. gave $18M to community COVID relief

Through a variety of grants and funds, the nonprofit’s contribution to the region totaled $17,952,763.
“The COVID year has been heartbreaking,” Garvin said in an emailed statement. “We all know people, we all remember people no longer with us. And we feel that loss. The COVID year has also been about the power of hope; how together we offered support, how together we helped, how together we offered hope.”
Garvin recounted how a series of emails and meetings quickly led to both the establishment of the We Care Fund, United Way’s initial coronavirus pandemic response fund, and shortly thereafter, the Worcester Together Fund, jointly run by both the nonprofit and the Greater Worcester Community Foundation. ....

Business Leader of the Year: Worcester Together came to the rescue


A lot of people and businesses needed help, and agencies were eager to react. Plenty of donors were willing to pitch in.
Bringing the two together wasn’t so easy in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, but the leaders whose efforts eventually became the Worcester Together fund quickly had to match needs with giving during a time when a health crisis was moving so fast that little time could be wasted.

From late winter 2020 through July, the fund had undoubtedly succeeded expectations, with more than $10 million raised, much of it going to dozens of organizations in and around Worcester, for both the most immediate needs such as food and housing, to more intermediate needs and planning agencies would need as the pandemic went on. ....

AMA Ice Racing Grand Championship Schedule Announced

The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is announcing its Ice Race Grand Championship Schedule.  In a press release, the AMA says America’s finest motorcycle ice racers will have two opportunities to compete for AMA #1 plates in 2021. The two events will occur three weeks apart in January and February in Wisconsin.
First event
The first event will be a “Grand Prix-style” competition on January 17, 2021. It is running in conjunction with the Steel Shoe Fund‘s annual three-hour endurance race. These events will run on Kettle Moraine Late at the Tiki Beach Bar and Resort in Campbellsport, Wisconsin. Making things even more interesting is the circuit’s design. It is once again an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Jeff Fredette circuit. ....

Shelter Island Reporter obituary: Elaine Jackson Stack - Shelter Island Reporter

Elaine Jackson Stack, a retired Justice of the New York State Supreme Court and a highly respected member of the Long Island legal community, passed away Dec.19 due to complications from COVID-19.
Her death was confirmed by her daughter, Dede Stack Unger.
Judge Stack, who was known universally as Jackie, was 89, and resided in Mineola and Shelter Island. She had been a long-time resident of East Hills, N.Y., where she raised her family and had served as deputy mayor. At her death, she was Of Counsel to the Garden City law firm of Barket Epstein Kearon Aldea & LoTurco, where she was head of the Family & Divorce Mediation Group. ....
