Charity calls for governments to intervene over stranded seafarers - Pacific Beat

An Australian charity is calling on international governments to do more to help 400,000 seafarers, including Pacific Islanders who are stranded because of border closures and COVID-19 restrictions.
Reverend Garry Dodd of the Seafarers Mission to Australia said the festive season has been tough as many of those stranded still don t know when they ll return home, to loved ones.
International border closures mean that seafarers including many from the Pacific have been at sea for well beyond their 10-month contract.
Reverend Dodd said governments have the power to ease the suffering faced by seafarers.
It s not impossible but it is hard and its costly. If there was political will there wouldn t be 400,000 seafarers who are currently stranded, he said. ....

Pompeii dig uncovers secrets from unearthed fast-food eatery

Helping to understand the dishes that might popular with the citizens of Pompeii, a supposed fast food eatery in the Roman city was unearthed.
Massimo Osanna, the longtime chief of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, while some 80 eateries were found at the city following the volcanic explosion, this is the first thermopolium to be completely unearthed
A part of the counter was dug up in 2019. Since then, multi-sided counters wide holes inserted into its top, which purportedly held deep vessels for hot food. The counter features an image of an undersea nymph astride a horse on one side, while two upside-down mallards and a rooster are featured on another. ....
