Artificial intelligence predicts gestational diabetes in Chinese women

 E-Mail
WASHINGTON Machine learning, a form of artificial intelligence, can predict which women are at high risk of developing gestational diabetes and lead to earlier intervention, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society s
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Gestational diabetes is a common complication during pregnancy that affects up to 15 percent of pregnant women. High blood sugar in the mother can be dangerous for the baby and lead to complications like stillbirth and premature delivery. Most women are diagnosed with gestational diabetes during the second trimester, but some women are at high risk and could benefit from earlier intervention. ....

Whether you re starting your day with a Southern coffee (i.e.: a Coke) or you re streaming Netflix late at night alongside a bottle of your favorite sugary, caffeinated beverage, there s never a
good time of day to drink a soda. Whenever you indulge, you re going to instantly send sugar flooding into your bloodstream, your pancreas will need kick into high gear to push that sugar into your muscles to try and convert what it can into energy, and any excess sugar will likely get stored in the liver and turn into fat. (Oh, and you ll likely experience a gnarly sugar crash.) Drink too much, too often, and you re looking at some serious damage your body. The more regular soda cans per day we drink, the more likely we are to die from heart disease, integrative medicine physician Irina Todorov, MD, notes on behalf of the Cl ....

Dec. 22 (UPI) Artificial intelligence can effectively identify women at high risk for gestational diabetes during the first trimester, allowing treatment to begin at an earlier stage of the disease, according to a study published Tuesday by the Endocrine Society s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Researchers in China used machine learning, a form of AI, to develop a model that can predict whether women will develop the disease about 80% of the time. ....

Different forms of sugar impact hunger-suppressing hormones in young adults

 E-Mail
WASHINGTON Drinks with sucrose compared to glucose may cause young adults to produce lower levels of appetite-regulating hormones, according to a new study published in the Endocrine Society s
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
Too much sugar consumption is a contributing factor for obesity. Sucrose, or table sugar, is composed of equal parts glucose and fructose and is often added to processed foods like soda, candy, cereal and canned foods. Glucose can be found in foods like honey and dried fruits.
Our study found that when young adults consumed drinks containing sucrose, they produced lower levels of appetite-regulating hormones than when they consumed drinks containing glucose (the main type of sugar that circulates in the bloodstream), said study author Kathleen Page, M.D., of the USC Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles, Calif. This study is the first to show how individual characteristics, including body weight, sex and insuli ....
