People with high BMI may now receive their COVID-19 vaccine in California

People with high BMI may now receive their COVID-19 vaccine in California
As vaccine efforts commence in many countries, prioritizing who receives the vaccine first is in place. Health workers and front-liners will receive the first doses, followed by those at the most significant risk of dying from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
Now, California state allows individuals with one of ten comorbidities to get their COVID-19 jabs. This comes after obesity being tagged as COVID-19 vaccine eligibility.

Scientists discover how novel pathogens promote colorectal cancer development

Scientists discover how novel pathogens promote colorectal cancer development
Do BMMFs, the novel infectious agents found in dairy products and bovine sera, play a role in the development of colorectal cancer? Scientists led by Harald zur Hausen detected the pathogens in colorectal cancer patients in close proximity to tumors. The researchers show that the BMMFs trigger local chronic inflammation, which can cause mutations via activated oxygen molecules and thus promote cancer development in the long term. BMMFs and inflammatory markers were significantly more frequently detectable in the vicinity of malignant intestinal tumors than in the intestinal tissue of tumor-free individuals. ....

Exercise during pregnancy can disrupt the vicious cycle of parents-to-child transmission of diseases

Exercise during pregnancy can disrupt the vicious cycle of parents-to-child transmission of diseases
Exercise during pregnancy may let mothers significantly reduce their children s chances of developing diabetes and other metabolic diseases later in life, new research suggests.
A study in lab mice has found that maternal exercise during pregnancy prevented the transmission of metabolic diseases from an obese parent - either mother or father - to child. If the finding holds true in humans, it will have huge implications for helping pregnant women ensure their children live the healthiest lives possible, the researchers report in a new scientific paper.
This means that one day soon, a woman s first trip to the doctor after conceiving might include a prescription for an exercise program. ....

UofL and Medtronic collaborate to develop epidural stimulation software for spinal cord injury

UofL and Medtronic collaborate to develop epidural stimulation software for spinal cord injury
Researchers at the University of Louisville made news worldwide in 2018 when two people diagnosed with complete spinal cord injuries recovered the ability to walk thanks to experimental use of a therapy known as epidural stimulation. The news gave hope to people living with complete spinal cord injuries, a diagnosis that historically meant they were unlikely to regain function below their level of injury.
Despite these significant results, use of epidural stimulation outside a research lab setting to restore function for people with spinal cord injury thus far has been hampered by several limitations, including the use of a technology that was designed for patients with chronic, intractable pain - not those with spinal cord injury. ....
