Activists in Nashville this weekend held a series of 24 Hour Display of Power events in response to violence, beginning Friday night with a service at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Bordeaux. The event continued Saturday with a march to and rally at the Metro Courthouse downtown.
The events — organized in part by members of Black Nashville Assembly — were staged as a form of violence interruption in response to recent deadly incidents in Nashville. Indeed, within hours of the events commencement, a man carrying a knife was shot and killed by a police officer in Bordeaux, roughly a mile-and-a-half from Friendship Missionary Baptist. ....

24 hours of peace rally calls for end to violence in Nashville


A 24-hour demonstration to celebrate community and peaceful coexistence, and gather against violence kicked off Friday in Nashville.
The effort,  24 Hour Display of Power: 24 Hours of Complete Peace,  will focus on  solidarity and building power amongst community members in an effort to take back the city, community organizer Gicola Lane said Friday.
A rally and march in connection with the demonstration are slated for Saturday.
The goal is to really just call for absolute peace across the city, Lane said. Our community is in pain. We have experienced a large influx of violence from multiple directions. We ve lost a lot of people to both community and police violence.. We re asking the entire city to display unity. ....

Groups rekindle Metro budget protests


COVID economy measures perpetuate feelings of unrest
A recent protest at the Metro Courthouse suggests city officials and community groups are no closer to aligning than they were a year ago, when we all entered the COVID economy.
Grievances at Friday’s budget rally echoed those of June last year when several of the same organizations came to the same spot and demanded, among other things, that Metro Government cut police funding, restore dwindling social services and dole out goods according to the needs of jobs characterized as overlooked.
Demonstrators at City Hall included Workers’ Dignity, a self-proclaimed worker-led center fighting for economic justice; the Nashville People’s Budget Coalition, a budget-reform advocacy group; the Black Nashville Assembly (BNA), an African-American corps promoting social justice; People’s Alliance for Transit, Housing and Employment (PATHE), defenders of fundamental human rights at the municipal level; Unemployed Workers ....
