The Beacon The Terra State Community College Board of Trustees announced that Gov. Mike DeWine has appointed Nicholas H. Gerber of Port Clinton and Mircea Handru of Tiffin to serve on the board of trustees, and Timothy Myers of Fremont for another term. “I am excited to join the team and serve Terra State and the local communities. Terra State is such an awesome resource to our community, and I look forward to sharing the message and helping expand the opportunities,” said Gerber, vice president of business development for The Ashley Group of Sandusky. Handru is the executive director for the Mental Health and Recovery Services Board of Seneca, Sandusky and Wyandot Counties. Myers is general manager of Century Die Company in Fremont. ....
Ashland Times Gazette On Feb. 19, the Ashland Times-Gazette highlighted some local teachers in a story that showed how they educate students about Black history ( How educators teach amid racial reckoning ). It mentioned Mark Conduit, Oliver Warren, Justine Baker, Melanie Ferguson and Nick Gerber. I would like to thank these and all teachers for the hard work they do in educating curious minds. I also learned a lot about Martin Luther King by reading his letter from Birmingham jail. Dr. King was a man with a very strong faith in God and his faith helped him do great things! I encourage everyone to read his letter. ....
As the nation reckons with issues of racism and social justice, area high school students curiosity about American history and current events, along with their openness to engage, has piqued significantly, social studies teachers say. They re drawing parallels between the civil rights struggle and present-day issues, said Mark Condit, who teaches AP U.S. government and politics to 11th and 12th-graders at Ashland High School. Just the other day, students were debating The 1619 Project as we were learning about the March on Washington and Martin Luther King s movement. They re bringing in outside sources not part of the curriculum, and they come ready to discuss difficult topics. ....
