GREAT BARRINGTON â€” Rabbi Neil Hirsch opens a centuries-old Torah scroll that was seized by the Nazis. The sacred document now lives here, at Hevreh of Southern Berkshire.
Though it is estimated to be more than 200 years old, it is used frequently.
Most [of the Czech scrolls] are not in good enough shape, he said.
At 1 p.m. Tuesday, the Jewish Broadcasting Service will air a documentary, The Messenger, which tells the story of these scrolls, and two other Holocaust films by New Marlborough filmmaker Michael Shocket, a London native who is a member of Hevreh. The broadcast comes in time for Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, which begins Thursday.  ....

Massachusetts rabbi highlighted in documentary “Commandment 613”
By Stacey Dresner
WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS – Miriam Lewin was in Leeds visiting her first cousin Rabbi Kevin Hale in August of 2016 when she learned of his work with the Czech Memorial Scrolls.
Hale is one of 17 authorized scribes who work on the restoration and repair of scrolls that were rescued after World War II by the Czech Memorial Scrolls Trust in London. Today more than 1,500 restored Czech Torah scrolls are on permanent loan in Jewish communities all over the world.
“I always knew what he did,” Lewin said. “But one day I was visiting him at his house in the Pioneer Valley and he was telling me about the work that he does with these specific scrolls – the Torah scrolls from the Memorial Scrolls Trust – and that he goes to a lot of congregations and works on the scrolls, and I blindly said, ‘That sounds like a film!’ Kind of like Judy Ga ....

This year’s Pioneer Valley Jewish Film Festival to be presented virtually will feature seven film screenings, including one about Northampton’s Rabbi Kevin Hale, who has dedicated his life to the 613th biblical commandment to write a Torah scroll.
Miriam B. Lewin is the director and producer of that short documentary, “Commandment 613,” and she is Hale’s cousin.
“A few years ago, he started telling me about his work on a particular set of Torah scrolls, the ones that belong to the Memorial Scrolls Trust in London, and are loaned out to communities around the world,” she said. “These scrolls come from communities in Czechoslovakia and were saved there during World War II. When he described to me the deep feelings they bring out for the people who now care for the scrolls, I thought it sounded like a good subject for a documentary.” ....

It was the evening of Nov. 9, 1938, and throughout Nazi-controlled Germany, government-sanctioned violence was leading to destroyed synagogues, social unrest and the arrest of thousands of Jewish citizens. That night would become known as Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass.
Jakob Weinblum, a Jewish teenager born in Forst (Lausitz), Germany, risked his life that night to flee to his shul, where he managed to save its cherished Torah scroll before the building was burned. In 1939, the Torah accompanied him and his family to the only country taking Jews without passports China. After eight years in a makeshift Shanghai synagogue, the Torah traveled, along with Jakob, to the U.S. and eventually found a home ....
