Conditional Citizens, the Moroccan-born novelist tells a story presumably experienced by a select number of naturalized Americans. Returning home from a sojourn abroad in 2000, Lalami, a newly christened citizen of the great republic and bearing a freshly minted passport, is met with a distinctly inhospitable greeting.
