McKee vetoes registry for short-term housing rentals

Gov. Dan McKee on Thursday vetoed legislation that would make property owners register with the state before listing short-term rentals through online lodging websites such as Airbnb and VRBO.
I cannot support this bill because it will create additional burden for property owners, McKee wrote in a veto message. Short-term rental concerns, like other property/land use and small-business matters, are most effectively addressed at the municipal level.
The idea of a short-term rentals database originated on tourist-heavy Aquidneck Island with the support of municipal leaders and residents who feel neighborhood streets are being transformed into hotel districts.
The push for tighter enforcement of vacation rentals gained traction after a 22-year-old man was stabbed to death in a Newport rental this spring. ....

RI Senate approves climate bill proposed by Newport Sen. Dawn Euer

The Providence Journal
PROVIDENCE The effort to make reductions of planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions mandatory in Rhode Island took a big step forward Tuesday with Senate approval of the Act on Climate bill.
The landmark legislation that environmental groups, public-health experts and citizen advocates say is necessary for the state to do more to fight climate change won passage in a 33-to-4 vote.
Climate change is real, and its impacts will continue to be devastating if we don’t take action. This is without question our battle and our responsibility,” said Sen. Dawn Euer, the Newport Democrat who introduced the legislation. “This bill is critical to make sure we take the climate crisis seriously and take action as a state.” ....

PROVIDENCE As Republican elected officials across the country push for new voting restrictions, a coalition of 27 groups is calling for Rhode Island to lower barriers to using mail ballots, expanding early voting, and allowing same-day voter registration.
The “Let RI Vote” coalition – with groups such as Common Cause Rhode Island, the League of Women Voters, and the ACLU of Rhode Island – launched its drive on Wednesday, saying that despite the pandemic, Rhode Island broke voter turnout records in November because vote-by-mail barriers were temporarily reduced and residents were encouraged to cast mail ballots or vote early in-person. ....

GUILD In 1980, there was a knock on Da Wiggins’ front door.
It was Peter Burling and he was going door-to-door campaigning for a New Hampshire Senate seat against a popular Republican. Wiggins lived down the street from the Sturm, Ruger gun plant “where I was not a popular fellow,” Burling recalled.
Upon answering, Wiggins looked at the Cornish Democrat and said, “Are you crazy to be going around here? Come in here.” ....
