Obituary: Dr Ian Gibson, scientist and respected MP who remained true to his principles

Died: April 9, 2021.
DR Ian Gibson, who has died at the age of 82 from pancreatic cancer, was that rarity among MPs – an acknowledged expert in science and medicine who embarked on a Parliamentary career because he believed that, through politics, he could do good for a greater number.
Dr Gibson was born in Dumfries, but his adopted city was Norwich where he was elected for its North constituency in 1997 at the age of 58. A man very much of his own opinions, he won the chairmanship of the Commons Select Committee on science and technology in 2001, despite opposition from the Labour whips. ....

Trade unions have spent too long amplifying Labour fantasies. It's time they got back to reality

Against a backdrop of apathy and to no great fanfare, important events are unfolding within the Labour movement. The candidates to succeed Len McCluskey as general secretary of Unite, Labour’s largest affiliate union and biggest paymaster, are seeking the branch nominations needed to gain entry to the ballot of members. Already, we are deep into the arcane language of a movement in love with its own procedures. The rules are Byzantine and the initial electorate is limited to committed activists, so winning the right to stand is much of the battle.

This allows activists to take even greater control and three of the candidates – Steve Turner, Howard Beckett and Sharon Graham – are, lo and behold, salaried employees of the union. Only Gerard Coyne, who had the temerity to challenge McCluskey in ....

Remembering the great postal workers' strike of 1971

FEBRUARY 15 1971 was United Kingdom Decimalisation Day: no longer were there 12 pennies to a shilling, half-crowns or 240 pennies to the pound.
That day, 50 years ago, was also just over halfway through the greatest strike this country had seen since the General Strike of 1926: the 44-day national strike of 200,000 Post Office workers.
Telegraphists, telephonists, Post Office counter clerks, cleaners, postmen (170,000 of them!) and PHGs (postmen higher grade), members of the Union of Post Office Workers (UPW), struck for their claim of 15 per cent, or £3 a week for lower-paid grades such as cleaners.
They picketed, they lobbied, they marched, but after six-and-a-half weeks they went back to work defeated: why was that?  ....
