Public health guidelines to protect against COVID-19 are going to be much easier to implement in schools this academic year compared to the 2020-21 school year, said Heather Armelino, the superintendent of the Enterprise Elementary School District.
For now, students no longer have to stay in the same groups all day, distance themselves, or wear masks outdoors.
Students and staff are only mandated to wear masks indoors when they go back to school in August, according to California Public Health Guidance for K-12 schools.
If families are opposed to their children wearing masks in schools, they have an option to choose independent learning, Armelino said. Families who choose this option will essentially have their kids in distance learning every day in grades K-3 and once a week with daily check-ins for grades 4-8, she said.  ....

Summer camps have filled up quickly this year and waiting lists are running long as families look for activities to keep kids engaged.
The six summer camps at the Turtle Bay Exploration Park are maxed out, lead educator Katie Weber said. There s a summer camp for various themes   from arts, science and forensic science to tech, sports and nature, she said.
Because of COVID, Turtle Bay day camps were split into two cohorts and are actually accepting more kids than in previous years, Weber said. She said she also has noticed a lot more people wanted to get into camp this year as well.  ....

With the academic year coming to an end, Lisa Carlton reflected on what it was like to teach her students with the uncertainty the coronavirus pandemic cast over how schools would operate.
There were sleepless nights when she didn t know whether she would teach a class of kindergarteners in person or online.
Manzanita Elementary School started with a hybrid schedule and by last October, transitioned to a full-time in-person schedule with a distance learning option.
“It was all unknown at the beginning. Having students not show up to meetings because they really couldn’t was hard because I didn’t want anyone falling behind on my end,” Carlton said. ....

Nurse shortage could make reopening school campuses more difficult

School nurses could play a key role in helping school campuses reopen and keeping students and staff safe during the Covid-19 pandemic, but many California schools don’t have one. In districts that have nurses, most divide their time between multiple schools.
The lack of nurses on campuses can be challenging for schools, which must meet a raft of strict health and safety requirements in order to reopen campuses, including screening staff and students for symptoms of Covid-19, testing and contact tracing, and determining if anyone needs to be removed from the school and quarantined.
“School nurses should be involved in all conversations about school reopening and student health,” said Pamela Kahn, president of the California School Nurses Organization. “But in many districts nurses aren’t even at the table.” ....
