Why 10Gig is the right PON play today

Worldwide, operators of all types are turning up an increasing number of passive optical networks. Whether they are telcos transitioning off their legacy DSL platforms, overbuilders trying to reach multiple dwelling units, cable operators targeting greenfield builds or, increasingly, service providers entering currently underserved rural markets, there is an explosion in new fiber build activities.
Given the timing to the market, these operators face a decision. Should they continue embracing the 1Gig (or 2.5Gig) GPON and EPON networks, or should they move to the newer 10Gig platforms – either 10G-EPON or XGS-PON? I was just recently talking to a small operator and was surprised to learn they were still building out with 1Gig PON platforms. The UK's GB pound 1.4B 5G auction farce is still not over

Spectrum has never been so cheap not in the UK, anyway. Back in 2000, UK operators were fleeced by government authorities for £22.5 billion (US$31.3 billion) during an auction of licenses for 3G, an underwhelming technology now being phased out. Thirteen years later they forked out another £2.3 billion ($3.2 billion) for 4G, an impressive successor. By the time 5G rolled along, in 2018, the fee had dropped to just £1.4 billion ($2 billion). The depression lasts. Wrapping up today, this week s follow-on sale raised the same amount. Hang around till 6G and spectrum might even be free.
That is probably a forlorn hope while Europe s governments, the UK s included, continue to treat their telecom operators as cash-filled piñatas to be whacked at regular intervals. Never mind that £1.4 billion equals just 0.07% of the UK s borrowings. Or that national debt is growing by £1 billion ($1.4 billion) a day to pay for a lockdown that is starting to look far more harmful than the ....

WASHINGTON The Federal Communications Commission today adopted a Public Notice seeking comment on procedures for the auction of 100 megahertz of mid-band spectrum in the 3.453.55 GHz band that can be used to facilitate 5G deployment across the contiguous United States. Bidding in Auction 110 is expected to begin in early October 2021.
Wider 5G deployment means that more people in more places will be more connected. 5G will bring its users faster download speeds and lower latency and will open doors to new and innovative digital tools to benefit consumers. With speeds as much as 10 to 100 times faster than present networks, 5G networks will kickstart the next big digital transformation. The proposed application and bidding procedures in todays notice represent another key step toward unleashing the spectrum that will fuel that transformation. ....
