Staff Council votes for staff ombudsman

Texas State s Staff Council voted to submit a recommendation for staff ombudsman services in order to provide a private advocate for staff and advisors at its meeting on May 11. The council also provided updated weather protocols for upcoming commencement ceremonies.
Staff Council approved a recommendation by the salary setting review subcommittee to propose a staff ombudsperson who has knowledge of university policies and procedures. The recommendation states the staff member selected will receive a stipend for the position.
The subcommittee suggested this proposal due to the current employee grievance policy which leads to awkwardness and a lack of privacy for staff when dealing with grievances. ....

Administration addresses in-person instruction concerns at Faculty Senate

Texas State s Faculty Senate expressed concerns to university administrators about the return to in-person curriculum, in its Feb. 3 meeting.Â
Faculty Senate Chair Janet Bezner believes members concerns stem from feeling as if they have no alternative options but to return to face-to-face instruction.
âBasically, the bottom line is we feel like we should have the choice, and we don t feel like we have the choice, Bezner says.
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Gene Bourgeois says faculty members who did not feel comfortable with in-person instruction had the opportunity to request to remain online. Therefore, he says there should be little to no reason as to why faculty should be worried about teaching face-to-face. ....

Opinion: The university community should not fear COVID-19 vaccine

There has been speculation about the efficacy of a COVID-19 vaccine due to the speed of production within the last year. With hopesÂ of a vaccine becoming available to the student body in the coming weeks, questions have surfaced regarding its reliability and safety.
Public health officials have demonstrated that the COVID-19 vaccine is reliable and will play a major factor in ending the pandemic, and their trust in it and willingness to get vaccinated themselves should serve as a positive indicator for the Texas State community.
Student Health Center Director Emilio Carranco believes the vaccine is beneficial and safe to take, and students should not be concerned with its rapid development. ....
