Alexander Gesmundo assumed the highest post in the judiciary on Monday.
The country’s 27th chief justice took the oath of office before Supreme Court (SC) Senior Associate Justice Estela Perlas Bernabe, one of his two rivals for the position vacated by Diosdado Peralta on March 27.
Associate Justice Ramon Paul Hernando the other applicant for the post watched the ceremony online along with the other members of the Court and Gesmundo’s immediate family.
A former SC and Sandiganbayan magistrate, Gesmundo is President Rodrigo Duterte s fourth chief justice appointee in less than three years. ....

Presidential Legal Adviser Salvador Panelo, on the other hand, disclosed that Associate Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo is the personal choice of President Duterte to be the next chief justice of the Supreme Court.
“As a matter of SOP (standard operating procedure), judicial appointments are confirmed by my office only after they have been received by the Supreme Court. Given the long holiday, the earliest a judicial Appointment can be received by the Court would be this Monday. FYI,” Roque said in a statement Friday, April 2.
The vacancy in the Supreme Court’s top post came after the retirement of Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta on March 22, a position he held for almost one year and five months. ....

President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo as Chief Justice, a Malacañang official said Friday.
“Yes,” Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo said in a text message when asked to confirm Gesmundo’s appointment.
Panelo added that Gesmundo was Duterte’s “personal choice” to succeed Diosdado Peralta, who left the judiciary on March 27, one year ahead of his compulsory retirement.
Duterte’s spokesperson Harry Roque neither confirmed nor denied Gesmundo s appointment.
