High court denies Itawamba man's final appeal

JACKSON • An Itawamba County man s last chance to appeal his murder conviction and 40-year sentence for the 2008 death of his 4-month-old daughter ended Thursday.
The Mississippi Supreme Court denied the motion for rehearing of Joshua Clark May 6 in a 6-3 vote. The ruling effectively ends Clark s appeals. It follows a 5-4 ruling in February where the supreme court upheld both the conviction and sentence.
In filing the motion for rehearing, Clark and his attorney Jim Waide hoped that because the February ruling was a split decision, one of the justices would reconsider and vote in their favor. But the result was actually just the opposite. ....

President Donald Trump on Saturday attempted to insert U.S. District Judge Leslie A. Gardner, the sister of Georgia voting rights activist Stacey Abrams, as part of his latest desperate effort to take hold of the state s election process.
Trump over the past week has baselessly accused the siblings of Abrams and Georgia GOP secretary of state Brad Raffensperger of somehow swaying the state s election process in favor of President-elect Joe Biden and the Democratic Senate runoff candidates. Trump on Saturday blamed Judge Gardner, Abrams sister, of ....

Federal Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner recently blocked two Georgia counties from conducting a voter purge of thousands of people suspected to have moved out of the area. This comes ahead of the critical Georgia Senate runoffs that will decide who controls the US Senate. Judge Gardner is the sister of Stacey Abrams, a rising Democratic Party star because of her failed 2018 gubernatorial run. Abrams refused to concede that race and has spent  time since that race to flip Georgia blue. She did that. So, it seems pretty unlikely that legal challenges could succeed should there be any funny business in these runoffs.  ....

Did Stacey Abrams' Sister Oversee a Court Case Involving Abrams?

What s True
U.S. District Court Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner is the sister of Stacey Abrams, and ruled on a voter-registration case that was very similar to another case before a different district court in Georgia, which involved Abrams voting rights organization Fair Fight.
What s False
Neither Abrams nor Fair Fight were a party to the specific case before Abrams Gardner in the Middle District of Georgia in December 2020. The case involving Abrams and Fair Fight was overseen by a different judge in a different court.

Georgia Judge Rolls Back Order That Blocked Counties From Voter-Roll Clean Up

Georgia Judge Rolls Back Order That Blocked Counties From Voter-Roll Clean Up
The federal judge who on Monday blocked two Georgia counties from removing voters from voter rolls eased her order just before midnight Wednesday.
District Court Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner, an Obama appointee, ruled that Ben Hill County still cannot remove any voters from voter rolls but said the Muscogee County Board of Elections and Registration can remove voters if they do not rely solely on the U.S. Postal Service’s National Change of Address system.
The board must allow voters whose eligibility has been challenged to cast a provisional ballot in the Jan. 5, 2021, runoff elections. They also must advise the voter of specific evidence of ineligibility by phone and in writing by Jan. 6, and advise the voter of their right to be heard and present evidence in response to the findings. ....
