Two workers for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) railroad have died so far this month, one due to COVID-19 and the other in an industrial accident. Their deaths are the product of continuous speedup and cost-cutting, with which the railroad industry has continued in spite of the pandemic.
Fifty-three-year-old locomotive engineer Bryan D. Stowe died from COVID-19 last Monday. He had 23 years seniority at BNSF and was member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLET) Division 98 in Lincoln, Nebraska. BNSF is the largest Class 1 railroad in North America and has 41,000 employees. ....

Some in Jersey City believe Robert Menendez Jr., son of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez, may make a run at mayor in 2021.
The son of Democratic U.S. Senator Robert Menendez will be nominated to the board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, one of the region’s most powerful agencies, a source close to the appointment confirmed Wednesday.
Robert Menendez Jr. of Jersey City is one of three new appointees to be announced soon, and was the product of negotiations that have been ongoing since Gov. Phil Murphy took office in 2018. ....

Jacksonville nonprofit eyes 75 years of studies into racial inequity


In December 904WARD, a 5-year-old community organization advancing racial equity in Jacksonville, hired its first CEO and announced plans to expand its efforts to end racism in the community.
One of those efforts was compiling 75 years of research    looking back at decades of disparities and failed efforts to address them, according to the nonprofit  and producing an eight-part series of progress reports,  Race in Retrospect.
The introductory report, released Feb. 12, will be followed by weekly reports through February and March on progress in education, health, housing, justice and the legal system, employment, media and politics and civic engagement.​
