Gov. Ralph Northam has proposed using $700 million of Virginiaâs $4.3 billion share of federal stimulus funds for rural broadband, an amount that is said to be sufficient to get the state as close to 100% broadband coverage as possible by 2024.
This calls for context, although nearly universal broadband coverage is pretty good context on its own.

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – Botetourt County’s brand-new Colonial Elementary School is filled with top-notch technology; however, just over a week ago, stepping into the school was like stepping back in time as the school was off the grid for a month.
During construction, the incumbent internet provider couldn’t provide connectivity to the school in time for the its opening on January 25.
“It’s been difficult to go that long without the internet,” said Principal Tammy Riggs.
She worked with county leaders, Blue Ridge Towers and BriscNet to come up with a fix and found a temporary solution, a portable tower. ....

Broadband expansion moves forward

The Franklin County Broadband Authority was given an update on the countyâs expansion of high-speed internet at a meeting Dec. 15. Several communities have been provided with access to broadband in recent weeks with more expected in the coming months.
Steve Sandy, Franklin County director of planning and community development, announced that a $250,000 joint broadband expansion project between Franklin County and Shentel was completed this month, providing high-speed internet to homes in Union Hall and the Scruggs area of Moneta. The project began in September using funds from the CARES Act and is expected to provide internet to more than 100 homes. ....

Bedford County broadband internet provider shares plans for moving forward

BEDFORD â Representatives from two companies â Roanoke-based internet service provider Blue Ridge Internet Service Company, aka BriscNet, and Blue Ridge Towers â working to increase high-speed internet access to underserved and unserved areas of Bedford County, provided an update Monday to county supervisors.
Two of 12 towers, the Wheats Valley Reservoir and New London water tower locations, still are set to become operational and begin providing internet service as the broadband project moves into the second phase.
Ten towers currently are connected to the internet and are able to deliver service to BriscNet customers, and six of those towers currently serve subscribers, said John Manning, representing BriscNet. BriscNet is continually working to obtain more subscribers as the broadband project ramps up operations, he said. ....
