Immigration overhaul bill may reform Florida farm working conditions

WASHINGTON — Working conditions for Florida’s undocumented farmworkers could drastically improve under recently proposed immigration reform legislation that would put them on a long-awaited path to citizenship while also providing labor protections.

According to a new poll released by
Ryan Tyson of The Tyson Group, Florida voters support several measures pitched as improving election security and voter access.
The poll, commissioned by nonpartisan nonprofit Secure Democracy, found more than three-quarters of Floridians want ballot drop boxes to be monitored either in-person or by video.
The proposal earned 77% among the 600 voters polled, with Republicans backing it at a higher rate (83%) than Democrats or no-party voters.
Meanwhile, nearly seven in 10 said they want their family members or caregivers to be able to turn in a ballot on their behalf. A near equal number (67%) want more days of early voting, while most (57%) want the state to tell felons what fines they need to pay to regain voting rights. ....

Family of Fort Myers man confused by governor's decision not to commute sentence


A 58-year-old man with a 60-year sentence on minor drug charges was hoping for clemency from Gov. Ron DeSantis.
That hope was dashed for Michael Edwards on Wednesday after the Florida governor said he was not “inclined to commute at this time” during a meeting of the executive clemency board, which includes DeSantis and his Cabinet.
Edwards’ case went before the governor in September of last year, prompting DeSantis to ask for more time for a decision in the case due to Edwards being recently caught with contraband a cell phone at the time.
Edwards was given a 60-year sentence for selling a spoonful of cocaine, a street value of $850, to an ex-girlfriend, turned informant. Edwards was 30 at the time his sentence started. He was imprisoned under Florida’s three-strike law. ....
