Not Just For Numbers: Anchoring Biases Decisions Involving Sight, Sound, and Touch

Findings offer critical steps to better understanding the decision-making process
Numeric anchoring is a long-established technique of marketing communication. Once a price is mentioned, that number serves as the basis for – or “anchors” – all future discussions and decisions. But new research shows that this phenomenon is not limited to decisions that involve numbers, the use and understanding of which require high-level cognitive thinking. Anchoring also biases judgments at relatively low levels of cognition when no numbers are involved.
In research recently published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making, Gaurav Jain, an assistant professor in the Lally School of Management at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, demonstrated that anchoring even occurs in perceptual domains, like sight, sound, and touch. ....

Scientists develop rapid test for diagnosis of rare set of genetic conditions

Queen Mary University of London
Telomeropathies are caused by premature shortening of the tips of chromosomes, the DNA molecules which contain our genetic information.
They can result in a range of symptoms, including bone marrow failure, pulmonary fibrosis, cancer and liver disease in adults and children. There are currently about 1,000 people living with telomeropathies in the UK, many of which are undetected.
Now, researchers have developed a rapid laboratory test for diagnosing patients showing the many different types of symptoms that can arise from telomeropathies.
The technique, called high-throughput single telomere length analysis (HT-STELA), is a DNA-based blood test that provides high-resolution information. The researchers say it can be applied to a broader range of samples than existing tests, including fresh or frozen blood samples as well as DNA. ....

Endangered red wolf from Washington zoo receives novel operation at OSU veterinary hospital
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Specialists at Oregon State University’s veterinary hospital operated Tuesday on a rare red wolf from the breeding program at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Washington.
Chester, who was born at the Tacoma, Wash. zoo nearly two years ago, is one of only about 260 red wolves remaining in the world.
The procedure went smoothly and as of Wednesday morning, Chester was back home in Tacoma, bright-eyed and very excited about his breakfast.
“We’re feeling really excited and hopeful that this will help give him a good quality of life and help him feel better,” said Dr. Kadie Anderson, associate zoo veterinarian at Point Defiance and a 2011 graduate of OSU’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine. ....

Acoustic Graphene Plasmons Study Paves Way for Optoelectronic Applications

Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
– The first images of mid-infrared optical waves compressed 1,000 times captured using a highly sensitive scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope. –
KAIST researchers and their collaborators at home and abroad have successfully demonstrated a new methodology for direct near-field optical imaging of acoustic graphene plasmon fields. This strategy will provide a breakthrough for the practical applications of acoustic graphene plasmon platforms in next-generation, high-performance, graphene-based optoelectronic devices with enhanced light-matter interactions and lower propagation loss.
It was recently demonstrated that ‘graphene plasmons’ – collective oscillations of free electrons in graphene coupled to electromagnetic waves of light – can be used to trap and compress optical waves inside a very thin dielectric layer separating graphene from a metallic sheet. In such a configuration, graphene ....
