Ballad's Swift: 'If you're having symptoms go get that test'

If you’re having any symptoms of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), you should seek a test.
But over the last month, fewer and fewer people are getting tested, leading to a sharp increase in the region’s positive test rate, which reached its highest point since Jan. 23 on Thursday. Ballad Health’s Chief Infection Prevention Officer Jamie Swift said it’s important people who are experiencing any symptoms — even if it seems like it’s just allergies — to get tested, especially with new cases rising at rates not seen since January.

Doctors Have Reported an Extremely Rare Case of a Person Who Urinates Alcohol

Doctors Have Reported an Extremely Rare Case of a Person Who Urinates Alcohol
5 APRIL 2021
A woman in Pittsburgh has become the first documented case in a living person of an unusual medical condition where alcohol naturally brews in the bladder from the fermentation of yeast.

The condition, which researchers propose to call either bladder fermentation syndrome or urinary auto-brewery syndrome , is similar to another incredibly rare condition, auto-brewery syndrome, where simply ingesting carbohydrates can be enough to make you inebriated, even without consuming any alcohol via regular means.
In the case, doctors became aware of what seems to be a related syndrome, after attending upon a 61-year-old patient who presented with liver damage and poorly controlled diabetes. ....

Beloved Blacksburg cancer doctor reflects on 35 years of advances in care

“You are not going to die.”
Jana Cranwell has a vivid memory of the day she heard those words.
“I can still hear his voice,” she said of Dr. Harry McCoy, the Blacksburg oncologist who delivered the good news. “I can see his face.”
It was 2012 and Cranwell had just had surgery for breast cancer when she found McCoy.
“One thing I had known about him before I talked to him was that he told the truth,” Cranwell said. “If you were dying in two weeks, he would tell you.”
She first heard of McCoy when he treated her husband’s aunt, who died of terminal cancer. It was McCoy who told her she had only weeks to live. ....

With post-pandemic life on the horizon, some people are feeling dread and anxiety

Print article
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Dinner reservations are gleefully being made again. Long-canceled vacations are being booked. People are coming together again, in some of the ways they used to.
But not everyone is racing back.
Their stories are emerging as the world begins to reopen people secretly dreading each milestone toward normalcy, envisioning instead anxiety-inducing crowds and awkward catch-up conversations. Even small tasks outside the home a trip to the grocery store, or returning to the office can feel overwhelming.
Psychologists call it re-entry fear, and they’re finding it more common as headlines herald the imminent return to post-pandemic life. ....
