Moves to delay second dose of Pfizer vaccine not supported by test data

The delays had initially been proposed by the U.K. government as a means to get the first dose to as many people as possible amid limited supplies of the vaccine. Germany has since considered following the U.K. in the face of growing concerns over a more infectious variant of the virus, which emerged in England.
According to a report by the
Financial Times, Germany’s health ministry has asked the country’s vaccination commission “to review and evaluate the available data and studies and to issue a recommendation on this issue.”
But the
European Medicines Agency (EMA) said that the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine – the only COVID-19 vaccine currently approved for use in the EU – had been authorized as two injections, given at least 21 days apart and that changing this would require separate authorization. ....

Researchers are working on developing vaccines for various related coronaviruses, with the aim of preventing future pandemics in the laboratory of Pamela Björkman especially by the David Baltimore Professor of Biology and Bioengineering.
The SARS-CoV-2 virus that is causing the COVID-19 pandemic is just one of many different viruses in the coronavirus family. Many of these are circulating in populations of animals like bats and have the potential to jump into the human population, just as SARS-CoV-2 did.
Now, led by graduate student Alex Cohen, a Caltech team has designed a protein-based 60-subunit nanoparticle onto which pieces of up to eight different types of coronavirus have been attached. When injected into mice, this vaccine induces the production of antibodies that react to a variety of different coronaviruses including simila ....
