This year’s Arable April campaign is focusing on sustainability in the tillage sector.
The positive sustainability profile of the sector has gained a lot of publicity recently.
The carbon footprint of the tillage sector is about 14% of that of an average dairy farm, or around 30% of a typical beef enterprise. ....

This aerial photo taken from an airplane shows a reservoir near the old Piney Point phosphate mine, Saturday, April 3, 2021 in Bradenton, Fla. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency Saturday after a significant leak at a large pond of wastewater threatened to flood roads and burst a system that stores polluted waters. The pond where the leak was discovered is at the old Piney Point phosphate mine, sitting in a stack of phosphogypsum, a waste product from manufacturing fertilizer that is radioactive. Multiple species and multiple benefits

Multi species swards can dramatically reduce nitrogen use and help to improve soil health.
Research has been ongoing into multi species swards for a long time, but farm-scale research is still in the early stages.
As farmers are now required to reduce fertiliser use, this is the first advantage these types of swards have, with up to 40% of the mixture made up of legumes. Going over the 40% mark with legumes can result in nitrate leaching. The remainder of these swards are made up of grasses and herbs.
Aside from fertiliser reductions, these swards boast many potential benefits, including increased soil health, positive effects on animal health and an improvement in drought tolerance. ....

In episode one of Virtual Machinery Day 2021, we look at the various different low-emission slurry spreading (LESS) systems. Many farmers have availed of grant-aided support through the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS) to make the move to LESS technology, with over 2,800 systems funded to date under the scheme. In order to meet our emission targets, reduce ammonia losses to the atmosphere and to become more sustainable as an industry, it is important we make the transition. ....

Tillage Management: spring workload is intensifying

SHARING OPTIONS:
It is important to get some fertiliser incorporated into the seedbed ahead of planting. \ Donal O Leary
A variable week: Weather dominated what you could do on land over the past week as ground conditions continue to be variable because of either recent rain or heavier ground. Some growers are finished planting, others have some land that has remained too damp to work, while others got rained off yet again.
Rainfall over the week varied from 2.6mm in south Wexford to 53.4mm in east Galway and the month to date varies from either side of 30mm across much of the east coast to 80mm in Mullingar, with even higher amounts further west. ....
