The 7th Disarmament and Nonproliferation Summer School for Latin American and Caribbean diplomats jointly organized by CNS in partnership with the Mexican Foreign Ministry, the agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin American and the Caribbean (OPANAL) and the Matías Romero Institute in Mexico City, was held in a virtual format from 28 June – 9 July 2021. In view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This was the second virtual course following 5 previous courses that have been held in Mexico City since 2014. The course gathered more than 30 junior to mid-level diplomats from 16 countries in the region (with a majority of women participants) as well as 35 experts speakers and panelists from all over the world. ....

Washington has set seven conditions for lifting sanctions imposed under the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act of 2019. But to normalize ties with Damascus, the US is demanding authorities in the Levantine country to first meet six conditions, four of which have been set before civil war breaking out in 2011.

Last month, 75 years after nuclear weapons were first used, a treaty came into force that bans them. The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), also known as the ban treaty, is the culmination of a decade of work by civil society leaders and diplomats who, frustrated by stagnation in traditional venues, focused the lens of international humanitarian law on nuclear weapons. HIROSHIMA Setsuko Thurlow, a revered figure in the anti-nuclear movement, marked Jan. 22 with the release in Hiroshima of a documentary film about her life and news that the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons had taken effect, something she had long campaigned for.
The 89-year-old survivor of the atomic bombing of this western city who now lives in Canada is best known for her efforts on behalf of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons (ICAN).
Another female expat from Hiroshima who lives in the United States helped make the movie, which is interspersed with episodes of her own family members, also hibakusha survivors. ....
