San Francisco’s Green Apple Books is downsizing, with plans for the bookstore to close one of its four storefronts in September.
The Fiction & Music Annex at 520 Clement St. in the Inner Richmond will be consolidated into the company’s main bookstore at 506 Clement St. on the same block.
The move is meant to focus the store’s product offerings on books and will reduce the inventory of magazines, records, gifts and used DVDs, according to a blog post. ....

Vendela Vida on Finding Humor in the Darker Side of Teenage Life

Vendela Vida writes fiction about women whose lives are disrupted by violence: her first novel,
And Now You Can Go (2003), begins, “It was 2:15 in the afternoon of December 2 when a man holding a gun approached me in Riverside Park.” And her characters often face crises of identity. After her father dies, Clarissa journeys to Lapland in search of her mother and her real father’s identity (
Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name, 2007). Yvonne, a newly widowed woman in the early stages of grief, returns to the Turkish village where she spent her honeymoon (
The Lovers, 2010). Vida’s tone is lighter, sometimes tender, in her sixth novel.  ....

Children's book 'Ambitious Girl' by Kamala Harris' niece, Meena Harris, inspired by woman-powered family

The new documentary Kamala Harris: To Be The First details her journey of hope from Berkeley to Washington, where she will soon begin a new chapter as the first Black and Asian woman elected vice president of the United States.
Harris, who runs Phenomenal, a woman-powered lifestyle brand, was sporting a sweatshirt during the interview that said AMBITIOUS.
The message is I m not hiding it and I m not going to allow anyone to tell me who I am or how ambitious I can be, Harris explained. Part of it, too, is recognizing it. That this is a culture, a harmful culture that we have in our society and a perspective of women with power. ....

Booksellers Recommend: The Best Under-the-Radar Books of 2020

Natasha Gilmore, Idlewild Books and Open Borders Books, NYC
: This book contains two novellas and some short stories set around Colombia (and occasionally Miami). The narration is often low-affect, sharply cynical, and wryly observed. There’s a cutting honesty in the voice throughout the book that feels totally absent from so much literature now. It reminded me of the feeling of encountering something truly when I was a teenager. But then there’s just the crushing reality of coming into sexuality as a teen, colorism and racism in Colombia, the restlessness wrought by capitalism and the desire to flee yourself and the accidents of your birth that ultimately coalesce into something so universally resonant, that will make any reader feel seen and connected. Truly an author worthy of attention. ....
