The Rainbow River is one segment of the Florida Wildlife Corridor, nearly 18-million acres of protected public and private lands in the state.
Wedged between Florida's two coasts are some of the richest ecosystems in the US, teeming with native wildlife that prefers to be hidden from human view.
The animals' natural lives for the most part remain a secret to Floridians. To catch glimpses of them in the wild, Carlton Ward Jr. sets a camera trap and bides his time.

How to celebrate Earth Day 2021 in Gainesville, Alachua County


Earth Day 2021, this year's observance lauding nature conservation and appreciation, is Thursday and there are several ways people can honor it in Alachua County despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
The annual holiday celebrates the start of the modern environmental movement. It began in 1970 with a Wisconsin junior senator and has grown to include over 1 billion participants in more than 190 countries worldwide, according to the organization's website.
The first Earth Day helped create the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and legislation like the Clean Air Act. In 1990, it grew outside of the country. And now, it is the largest non-religious observance in the world, the website states.

Welcome back Howard! The original owner of Howard’s Flea Market, Quillen Howard, and the Howard family have taken back running their original flea market in Homosassa, in operation since 1972.

New refuge center will immerse you in world of manatees


Citrus County’s manatee-viewing experience draws people from all over the world because they can swim with manatees.
That alone is a huge tourism coup. But there has been one component of that experience that has been lacking and it is about to change this spring.
The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge will open its new state-of-the-art visitor center at 1520 SE King’s Bay Drive and from the moment visitors enter, they will be immersed in the world of water, manatees and more. The complex is expected to attract 40,000 visitors a year and enhance tourists’ experience in Crystal River and countywide.
