The Safety Gap — Challenges in Gas Detection -- Occupational Health & Safety

The Safety Gap — Challenges in Gas Detection
In this episode of the podcast, Editor Sydny Shepard talks with Honeywell Offering Manager Lead Richard Dunn about the "safety gap" he and his team found when surveying customer needs for gas detection.

Feb 25, 2021
On this episode of the podcast, I’m joined by Richard Dunn, an Offering Manager Lead at Honeywell to talk about the challenges companies and organizations might be having when it comes to keeping workers safe on the job.
Through his research with Honeywell, Richard and the team found that there is quite a significant safety gap when it comes to providing gas detection to full-time employees versus part-time contract workers. It seemed that while full time employees were outfitted with all the gas detection devices they might need, part-time contractors, on the other hand, were not as well equipped.

Training + Education = Balanced Safety Professional -- Occupational Health & Safety

Training + Education = Balanced Safety Professional
Yorlanda Fisher, President of Warriors 4 Safety, writes about the divide found amongst safety professionals when it comes to training versus education.
By Yorlanda Fisher
Feb 24, 2021
Sometimes there is a bit of divide amongst safety professionals that are formally educated but lack experience and those that have been trained by experience and have limited formal training. Sometimes it is a deal breaker for the employer and the professional.
One industry veteran said to me, "Darling, if you have enough time to go to school, then you aren't working to earn a living. Focus on learning in the field while earning.”

Improve Company Safety with Great Toolbox Talks -- Occupational Health & Safety

How can you hold effective toolbox talks to ensure your team is safer on the job?
By Michael Blanchard, Amanda Pederson
Feb 24, 2021
A toolbox talk, or tailgate talks, are typically given to a small group of workers early in their shift. The talks will usually detail one specific safety topic or issue that you would like your team to focus on for the day. Toolbox Talks are usually quite a bit less structured and formal compared to a regular safety training course and are not meant to be in depth reviews, but rather, used to keep a topic front of mind.

Protect your people: Understand how ISO 45001 considers the changing work environment and the effect it has on its employees, both physically and mentally. -- Occupational Health & Safety

Protect your people: Understand how ISO 45001 considers the changing work environment and the effect it has on its employees, both physically and mentally.
There are new pandemic-driven, occupational risks that safety managers now have to contend with related to the new-normal of home-based working and changes to the workplace environment; each of these magnify gaps in traditional, compliance-focused organizational safety management systems.  Beyond workplace environment hazards, there are new considerations for how work is organized and sensitivities to social factors that affect the psychosocial wellness in workforces.

Safety Directors Have Spoken: Footwear Struggles You Might be Having -- Occupational Health & Safety

Safety Directors Have Spoken: Footwear Struggles You Might be Having
A survey sent to safety directors has narrowed down the top struggles workers have with their protective footwear. Listen along as Editor Sydny Shepard and Vice President of Marketing at Warson Brands discuss the results of the survey and more.

I’m sure you’ve heard it before: Everyone should be getting 10,000 steps a day. For some, that is a hard to reach goal as their jobs rely on desk work or other types of sedentary tasks. For others though, such as individuals in the manufacturing or construction industries, getting 10,000 steps just requires them to work a portion of their 8-hour shift, making feet tired, sore and possibly leading to chronic conditions. These industries also present numerous tasks that can bring harm to feet such as slips, trips and falls, crushing injuries and more.

5 Reasons Industrial Vacuum Cleaners Need to be Part of Your Dust Control Program -- Occupational Health & Safety

5 Reasons Industrial Vacuum Cleaners Need to be Part of Your Dust Control Program
Sweeping or blowing fugitive dust during housekeeping is widely discouraged by OSHA and the NFPA for nearly all industries. Seemingly benign, dusts create an assortment of hazards that include flying particles that can lead to eye injury, slip hazards and ergonomic injuries. The most serious hazards surrounding the sweeping and blowing of dust threaten lives, such as respiratory and explosion hazards. The use of industrial vacuums to remove dust is almost always recommended as a preferred method of removing fugitive dust. Rather than redistributing dust, industrial vacuum cleaners remove dusts and therefore reduce or eliminate the previously mentioned hazards.

Ergonomics -- Occupational Health & Safety

Videos
Many dental hygienists work in pain or know others suffering from musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as tendonitis, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome. Dental hygienists and their employers can prevent MSDs by paying attention to ergonomics. This means taking simple and practical steps to design or arrange the workplace for safe and efficient work. This first video in a five-video series provides an introduction to work-related MSDs and how to prevent them.
The video was produced by the Occupational Health Surveillance and Evaluation Program (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/programs/ohsep) in the Occupational Health Branch of the California Department of Public Health. OHB partnered with the University of California, Berkeley, Ergonomics Program and the California Dental Hygienists' Association to create videos on ergonomics by and for dental hygienists.

A new survey from CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training, supported by the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), aims to gather key insights from safety and health professionals this spring that can help advance fall protection in all industries worldwide.
Results from the online Fall Experience Survey, which explores the root causes of falls from height, will assist the ANSI/ASSP Z359 Fall Protection and Fall Restraint Committee in enhancing voluntary national fall protection and fall restraint consensus standards that guide occupational safety at construction sites and across all industries.
