Cumberland County joins Freedman's Bureau Transcription Project


Multiple organizations in Cumberland County are helping tell the county’s history through the Freedmen’s Bureau Transcription Project. 
The Freedmen’s Bureau Transcription Project is an effort to transcribe the Freedmen’s Bureau records. The bureau was a government department that was in charge of supporting previously enslaved persons in their transition to freedom and citizenship, according to a news release from the Cumberland County library.
The Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African American History and Culture has worked with the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission and the State Library of North Carolina to shine a light on a hidden part of history in the Freedmen’s Bureau, formally known as the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, the release said.  ....

History comes alive when we have a chance to connect it in time and place to our present reality.
The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture has collaborated with the North Carolina African American Heritage Commission and the State Library of North Carolina to offer a major opportunity to view history through a unique lens. By transcribing thousands of North Carolina records from the Federal Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands (nicknamed the Freedmen’s Bureau), participants will get an up-close look at events in the lives of local North Carolinians  to include many in Wilmington and Fayetteville during Reconstruction, the period immediately following the deadliest war in American history. ....

Starbucks Community Resilience Fund Exclusively Pledges $100 Million to Advance Small Business Growth and Community Development Projects in Black Community.
The Seattle-based company, Starbucks, has created the Starbucks Community Resilience Fund as of January 12, 2021, the franchise has committed to invest $100 million over the next four years to support small businesses and community development projects in areas mostly populated by Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC).
Starbucks’ financial initiative intends to focus on 12 U.S. metropolitan areas, such as, Atlanta, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New Orleans, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Washington D.C. ....
