The World Is Indeed Improving: A Response to Philipsen and Trebeck

I wish to thank Dr. Katherine Trebeck and Dr. Dirk Philipsen for their response to our lead essay. It is a pleasure to discuss important ideas with scholars who are searching for the truth and human betterment. Trebeck and Philipsen question “the human ability to invent itself out of the basic laws of physics” and call for “A Wellbeing Economy [that] positions the economy in service of human flourishing and true freedom; less precariousness and more dignity; fewer dirty industries and more businesses who put their workers and communities front and center.”
I agree that humanity still faces many problems, but I ask, along with the British historian Thomas Babington Macaulay, “On what principle is it that with nothing but improvement behind us, we are to expect nothing but deterioration before us.”[1] Below, I outline a number of ways in which the world has become a better place over the last few decades and propose that many people are already living in a Wellbein ....

Residents Launch Political Book Club at Livermore Library

During the pandemic, local residents gathered to partner with the Livermore Public Library and create a political book club that meets on the third Tuesday of every month via Zoom.
“There is a common understanding that you should not discuss politics or religion,” participant Werner Schlapfer said. “I completely disagree. In fact, for me, the book clubs are one of the only venues for such worthwhile discussions. If you are afraid to have your ideas challenged, do not join. If on the other hand, you are willing to hear new points of view, you will learn a lot.”
Topics that are otherwise considered taboo are regularly discussed in the Political Book Club. Molly Bang, another participant, has always been intrigued by politics but found it challenging to find others with similar interests. ....

Catching Up With 'Coddling' part six: U.S. income stratification: a seventh causal thread?

FIRE
The Eternally Radical Idea
EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the sixth part of a multi-part series updating developments since the publication of “
Future articles can be found here.
In “The Coddling of the American Mind,” Jonathan Haidt and I identified a total of six causal threads that helped explain why Gen Z (roughly the generation born from 1996 to 2015) is so different from prior generations in terms of everything from higher rates of anxiety and depression, to attitudes about freedom of speech.
One of those causal threads was “paranoid parenting,” which includes “safetyism,” and the irrationally exaggerated fear of extremely low probability events, like stranger kidnapping. We also discussed a slightly different type of parenting paranoia, focused on academic performance, starting as early as preschool and leading to the soul-stealing and anxiety-producing “resume arms race” to be accepted into the extremely limited spo ....
