University of Leeds | News > Environment > Melting glaciers could speed up carbon emissions

Melting glaciers could be triggering a ‘feedback process’ that causes further climate change, according to new research.
An international research team led by the University has for the first time linked glacier-fed mountain rivers with higher rates of plant material decomposition, a major process in the global carbon cycle.
As mountain glaciers melt, water is channelled into rivers downstream. But with global warming accelerating the loss of glaciers, rivers have warmer water temperatures and are less prone to variable water flow and sediment movement. These conditions are then much more favourable for fungi to establish and grow.
Fungi living in these rivers decompose organic matter such as plant leaves and wood, eventually leading to the release of carbon dioxide into the air. The process – a key part of global river carbon cycling – has now been measured in 57 rivers in six mountain ranges across the world, in Austria, Ecuador, France, New Zealand, Norway ....

Uttarakhand tragedy: Heavy rains, rise in overall temp in four decades could have led to rock collapse

updated: Mar 06 2021, 17:06 ist
Heavy precipitation in the Chamoli region from February 4-6 and an overall rise in temperature in Uttarakhand in last four decades could have led to the rock collapse which triggered the deadly flash floods in the state last month, according to a study by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development.
The report by Kathmandu-based ICIMOD, which was released on Friday, found that a crack had formed prior to the incident at the site where the rock detachment led to a rockslide from the Raunti peak.
The rockslide brought along with it mounds of earth and snow which could have triggered the flash floods. With a straight slide line of 1.6 km (5500 to 3900 masl), the kinetic energy during the fall generated enough heat to melt the ice. ....

Iceberg about size of Greater London breaks off in Antarctica

It happened about a decade after scientists first observed huge cracks forming on the shelf.
BAS Director Professor Dame Jane Francis said that the scientists were expecting calving after monitoring the area with GPS devices and satellite imagery on a regular basis.
Our teams at BAS have been prepared for the calving of an iceberg from Brunt Ice Shelf for years, Francis said.
The iceberg is likely to either move away or run aground not far from the Brunt Ice Self, the director said.
A crack in the ice widened a lot early on Friday morning before the iceberg broke off entirely, news agency AFP reported. ....
