Burnham teenager wins second place in national archery competition
A Burnham-On-Sea teenager has won second place at the British Junior National Outdoor Archery Competition.
Molly Joyce, 14, a student at King Alfred School Academy, is a member of Burnham Company of Archers, who are based at the town’s BASC ground.
Last weekend, she travelled to Lilleshall, Shropshire to compete in the Under 16 age category at the event, shooting a traditional longbow.
The competition involved shooting 72 arrows at a target 50 yards away, 48 arrows at a target 40 yards away, and 24 arrows at a target 30 yards away.
Her father, Adam, says: “Molly started strongly, briefly leading.” ....

Adrian Bird and Skirmantas Kriaucionis of the University of Edinburgh have discovered a novel form of the protein MeCP2. This alternate form, coined MeCP2 alpha, differs from the original only in the first 19 amino acids. Interestingly, Adrian Bird, Director of the Welcome Trust Centre for Cell Biology at Edinburgh University, found that MeCP2 alpha, is ten times more prevalent not only in the brain but also in other tissues. These findings are currently reported online in Nucleic Acids Research. Similar findings were reported yesterday in Nature Genetics online by Berge Minassian, a neurologist and scientist at Toronto s Hospital for Sick Children. ....

SAASCR Honors 10 Indian American Scientists for Their Outstanding Cancer Research


The Society of Asian American Scientists in Cancer Research April 11 announced that it has honored 10 Indian American scientists for their outstanding cancer research.
Dr. Rajvir Dahiya, professor emeritus at U.C. San Francisco’s School of Medicine and president of SAASCR, presented awards to these scientists April 11 during the American Association for Cancer Research annual meeting, according to the news release.
The awardees were Drs. Zaver M. Bhujwalla, Pankaj K. Singh, Neil Bhowmick, Anand Srivastava, Neeraj Saxena, Kaustubh Datta, Bhagavatula Moorthy, Nagi Kumar, Parameswaran Hari and Arun Sreekumar.
Bhujwalla is the William R. Brody Professor in the Russell H. Morgan Department of Radiology and Radiological Science of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. ....
