I detect the same haste and forgetfulness in many recent government and media claims that eventually prove false due to inadequate research.
Note that the name of Sir John A Macdonald has been smeared similarly; his image was removed from the ten-dollar bill while two (Liberal) prime ministers remain who exercised questionable policies. More facts:

At times it must have seemed Burlington’s Jim Jordon was a living being spawned of the Mississippi River. No less that the wild birds that wandered its length or the lumbering fish that patrolled its depths, the river defined this accomplished sportsman.
City directories and employment records of the early 1900s might have listed Jim’s occupation as traveling salesman. But that was not the real Jim Jordon.
Those trips, as a representative of a Skinner-Lowden preserving company, and the business meetings were simply the price he paid to live the life he loved on the Mississippi. Trips to Europe, New York or some small out-of-the-way town were, to Jim, just a way of marking time until he could return to the river. ....

They are just two brief notes from the Burlington Gazette newspaper of 1885 and at the time attracted very little attention. The articles are given less space than the report of the Knights of Labor picnic at Schlampp’s Park or the Druids picnic at Bierweth’s Park on Fourth Street.
However, from a distance of 136 years, they raise the disconcerting possibility that this old river town was a gathering of feral sociopaths and random miscreants.
The first article is a police report concerning the very unfortunate George Smith, a barkeep at the venerable Union Hotel. The newspaper records that on the previous afternoon, George and his friends, Frank Foote and Tom Vaugh, were enjoying an autumn afternoon on the hotel’s front porch. ....
